The experiments keep agreeing with each other
Correlational studies could always be argued away — maybe unhappy people just scroll more. So researchers ran the real test: randomly assign people to cut back, and measure what happens. By now it has been run over and over — different universities, different timescales — and the results point the same way every time.
The UPenn 30-minute study
University of Pennsylvania undergraduates were randomly assigned to limit Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to 10 minutes per platform per day — about 30 minutes total — for three weeks, verified by battery-usage screenshots. The limited group showed significant reductions in loneliness and depression compared to controls, and the people who entered the study most depressed improved the most. It was the first experimental demonstration that the causality runs from social media to worse mental health — not the other way around.[1]
The NYU/Stanford deactivation experiment
Economists paid a randomized group of Facebook users to deactivate their accounts for four weeks before the 2018 midterms. Deactivation increased subjective well-being by an amount equal to roughly 25–40% of the effect typically attributed to clinical interventions for depression. Participants spent more time with family and friends in person, became measurably less politically polarized, and — the honest trade-off — were somewhat less informed about the news. Most telling: after the paid month ended, they kept using Facebook substantially less, entirely voluntarily.[2]
The University of Bath one-week break
Adults averaging eight hours of social media a week were randomly assigned to take one week fully off. The break group used social media for a total of 21 minutes that week, versus 7 hours for controls — and showed significant improvements in well-being (mean difference 4.9) and significant reductions in depression (−2.2) and anxiety (−1.7), after controlling for baseline scores, age, and gender. One week.[4]
The Iowa State replication
Two hundred thirty college students; half asked to limit social media to 30 minutes a day for two weeks, nudged by nothing more than a daily reminder text. The limited group scored significantly lower on anxiety, depression, loneliness, and fear of missing out — and higher on positive affect: excitement, pride, enthusiasm. A replication of the UPenn result, with a bigger sample and anxiety added to the list.[5]
What the meta-analyses actually show
Pooling the trials: a 2024/25 meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials (N=1,491) found reducing social media use significantly decreases depressive symptoms, effect size g = 0.25 after adjusting for publication bias.[6] A 2025 meta-analysis of 32 trials (N=5,544) found restriction improved subjective well-being, g = 0.17.[7] Statisticians call effects that size "small." For scale: the effect of taking aspirin to prevent heart attacks is about d = 0.07 — these effects are two to three times larger, and they are population averages. People with higher baseline symptoms consistently improve more.
The loneliness paradox
The most counterintuitive finding in this literature: using less "social" media makes people less lonely. UPenn found it; Iowa State replicated it; the deactivation experiment showed why — time freed from the feed flowed into in-person socializing.[1][2][5] The feed offers the sensation of connection without the substance. And the dose-response runs the wrong way for the platforms: young adults using 7–11 platforms had three times the risk of depression and anxiety of those using 0–2, and the heaviest quartile of users had twice the odds of perceived social isolation.[8]

Sleep first, then everything downstream
The physical evidence is strongest for sleep, eyes, attention, and body image; moderate — but consistent — for stress hormones and the brain's reward system. Here is what that evidence actually shows.
Sleep
People in the highest quartile of social media use have roughly twice the odds of sleep disturbance — nearly three times, when measured by how often they check.[3] A controlled lab study found evening screen readers took about 10 minutes longer to fall asleep, secreted less melatonin, shifted their circadian rhythm by over an hour, got less REM sleep, and were sleepier the next morning.[9] Three mechanisms stack: blue light suppresses melatonin, emotionally charged content keeps the mind aroused at bedtime, and infinite scroll is engineered to defeat "just one more" resolutions. Remove the feed and all three go with it — two-week detox studies record improved sleep quality directly.[29]
Movement
Cutting social media by just 30 minutes a day for two weeks produced increased physical activity, fewer depressive symptoms, and higher life satisfaction versus controls — and the gains held at three-month follow-up.[10] The displacement is measurable in the body itself: heavy phone use is associated with significantly lower objectively measured cardiorespiratory fitness.[11] Screen time doesn't just accompany less exercise; it replaces it.
Eyes
Between 50% and 90% of habitual screen users report digital eye strain. The normal blink rate of 15–20 per minute drops to 3–4 during screen use, drying and fatiguing the eyes.[12] This one reverses the simplest way possible: by looking at something else.
Stress hormones
Adolescents with larger Facebook networks showed higher diurnal cortisol — the signature of chronic social-evaluation stress.[13] In an experiment, quitting Facebook for just five days produced lower stress and higher life satisfaction.[14] The evidence here is moderate rather than airtight — but it points one direction.
Dopamine and attention
Brain-imaging research found social media cues activate the reward system much like drug cues — but with one crucial difference: the prefrontal "braking" system is less impaired than in substance addiction, which means the habit is more reversible.[15] Addiction science suggests dopamine receptor recovery within two to eight weeks of cutting back; users commonly report one to two weeks of restlessness, then a returning capacity to enjoy slower things. Attention recovers too: the mere presence of a smartphone — even switched off — measurably reduces available cognitive capacity,[16] and workers cut off from email and social feeds for five days reported significant improvements in sustained focus.[17]
Your people
Fewer "friends," better friendships
Face-to-face is the kind that counts
Across forms of social interaction, face-to-face communication was the only one consistently associated with improved well-being; digital contact did not deliver the same benefit.[18] And the hundreds of online "friends" don't expand your real circle: research on social network size found people's actual close circles stay the same — roughly 5 intimate, 15 good, 50 close, 150 casual — whether or not they are heavy social media users. The platforms add acquaintances, not friends.[19]
The phone between you
46.3% of adults report being "phubbed" — phone-snubbed — by their partner, and it measurably corrodes relationship satisfaction and contributes to depression.[20] The mere presence of a phone on the table during conversation reduces perceived relationship quality, trust, and empathy — most strongly during the conversations that matter most.[21] In families, 70% of women in couples reported technology regularly interfering with their interactions,[22] and in a survey of over 6,000 children, 32% said they felt unimportant when their parents were on their phones.[23] Putting the feed down returns you to the people in the room — and they notice.
Less polarized, more empathetic
Four weeks off Facebook reduced political polarization by 0.16 standard deviations — a measurable reversal of years of trend.[2] A field experiment in Bosnia and Herzegovina found one week of deactivation reduced hostility toward ethnic outgroups.[24] Even empathy is recoverable: sixth-graders sent to a five-day screen-free camp showed significant improvement in reading nonverbal emotional cues compared to controls.[25]
Boredom is a feature
The feed's promise is that you will never be bored again. That is a cost, not a benefit: boredom enhances creativity by letting the mind wander,[26] and the brain's default mode network — active only during rest and mind-wandering — is essential for self-reflection, moral reasoning, and memory consolidation. Constant scrolling suppresses it. In the largest one-week Facebook-break experiment, 1,095 Danes saw life satisfaction rise from 7.56 to 8.12 out of 10 — with the strongest effects for heavy users and for people prone to envying what they saw in the feed.[27]

The most measurable benefit of all
The average person spends about 2 hours 15 minutes a day on social media[28] — and self-reports typically undercount actual use by 30–50%, so the real figure is likely higher. The deactivation experiment measured what leaving returns: about an hour a day, immediately.[2] Compounded, the average habit costs:

The itch — and the first measurable relief
The early days are the hardest part. Users commonly report restlessness and reflexively reaching for the phone in the first week or two — the signature of a variable-reward habit unwinding, and evidence the habit was real. It passes. In one experiment, just five days off Facebook was already enough to measure lower stress.[14]

Well-being, depression, and anxiety all move
The Bath trial found significant improvements in well-being and significant reductions in depression and anxiety after seven days.[4] A separate seven-day detox study cut mean daily screen time from 6.48 to 2.03 hours, with large effects across all psychological outcomes — reduced stress, improved concentration.[29]

A two-week detox improved smartphone- and social-media-addiction scores, sleep quality, satisfaction with life, stress levels, perceived wellness, and the quality of supportive relationships.[29] The Iowa State trial confirmed lower depression, anxiety, loneliness, and FOMO — and higher positive affect — after 14 days at 30 minutes a day.[5]

The habit resets — and stays reset
Four weeks of deactivation improved well-being and freed about an hour a day — and when the study ended, participants voluntarily kept using Facebook less.[2] A 2024 scoping review adds two useful facts: people with higher baseline symptoms benefit most, and reducing tends to be as effective as full abstinence and easier to sustain.[29] Benefits appear in week one and strengthen from there.
